Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to unlocking the tourism potential of the state to further boost its economy.

Speaking at the 2024 Lagos Boat Regatta on Victoria Island, with the theme “Our Water, Our Heritage, Our Life,” the governor emphasized that the event showcased the cultural transformation and heritage revival of Lagos.

He expressed his desire to tap into the state’s waterways to develop a robust tourism ecosystem and expand its transportation system.

Declaring the event open, Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted that the boat regatta, which took place across the five divisions of the state, represents a shared vision of celebrating the beauty of Lagos’ waterways for the enjoyment of residents.

“We are excited to finally host this regatta, marking the start of a series of festive activities during this yuletide season. This event demonstrates our commitment to developing Lagos’ tourism potential,” he stated.

Sanwo-Olu reminded the audience that one-third of Lagos is surrounded by water, stressing the need to leverage its waterways not only for transportation but as a significant part of the tourism ecosystem. He further explained that the day’s activities would provide a showcase of water infrastructure and regatta displays, emphasizing the state’s potential for tourism, fun, and relaxation.

The governor, who joined a boat ride with some members of the executive council, encouraged Lagosians to take advantage of the event to unwind and experience the unique ambiance of the city’s waterways.

In her remarks, the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, noted that the 2024 Lagos Boat Regatta aimed to immerse participants in the state’s rich cultural heritage tied to its waterways. She added that the event serves as a catalyst for economic growth by boosting tourism and creating opportunities for local businesses, solidifying Lagos’ reputation as a premier global destination. Benson-Awoyinka also highlighted how the event celebrated community heritage and sustainability, offering an engaging, multi-sensory experience through parades, dance performances, and captivating visuals.
