In a landmark step toward inmate rehabilitation and reintegration, the Shamies Unusual Heart Foundation (SUHF) launched National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) Examination Centres at the Kuje and Suleja Custodial Centres in the Federal Capital Territory.

The event, which formed part of the 2025 Founder’s Day celebration of SUHF, was held under the theme: “Restoring Dignity Through Education and Second Chances.”

Also, the foundation sponsored the registration of 70 inmates for the registration of the upcoming 2025 November/December NABTEB examinations. The initiative aims to provide inmates with vocational and technical education that will significantly improve their employability, reduce recidivism, and foster reintegration into society.

Highlighting the impact of correctional education, an inmate who entered prison with only a WAEC certificate, has since completed advanced studies and authored seven books during his incarceration. His story, shared at the event, stands as a powerful testimony to the transformative role of education behind bars.

Representing the Controller-General of Corrections, Deputy Controller-General Amoran Olarewaju praised the Foundation’s sustained commitment, noting:

“The significance of today’s event is to ensure that those who are incarcerated are not just locked up but given wide opportunities to learn and grow. Education can help them reintegrate into society as valuable members.

Amb. Dr. Saratu Abdullahi, Executive Director and Founder of SUHF, reaffirmed the organisation’s long-term vision. “The joy I feel from touching lives and witnessing genuine happiness is immeasurable. This is not a one-off project; it is an ongoing commitment. With the support of my team and community, we will continue to provide opportunities for the inmates,” she said.

Mr. Bosun Ajibogun, Controller of Corrections for the FCT Command, described the initiative as a “game changer,” praising the comprehensive resources provided, including laptops, textbooks, and teaching materials. He further announced plans to extend the NABTEB programme to Suleja Custodial Centre.

The NABTEB centres at Kuje and Suleja stand as a milestone in SUHF’s mission to make crime less attractive, restore dignity to inmates, and offer them genuine second chances through education.

Established in 2019, the Shamies Unusual Heart Foundation since inception has been dedicated to the rehabilitation and reintegration of ex-convicts, and with over 10,000 lives impacted across correctional centres and underserved communities, the organization believes that education is one of the most powerful tools for sustainable reintegration and national development.
