COAS’ HONOUR IN EBONYI: A TRIBUTE TO LEADERSHIP AND THE POWER OF CIVIL-MILITARY COOPERATION By Comrade Oladimeji Odeyemi.

The conferment of the revered traditional title, Omu Udo I of Ebonyi, on the Chief of Army Staff (COAS Nigerian Army), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, by the Ebonyi State Council of Chiefs is far more than a personal accolade. It is a powerful symbol of the trust, confidence and mutual respect that can flourish when the Armed Forces and the people they serve work together in pursuit of a common national purpose.
At a time when Nigeria continues to confront complex and evolving security challenges, this recognition reinforces an enduring truth: no military, regardless of its strength, can secure a nation in isolation. Sustainable peace and security are built through collective effort—when traditional institutions, community leaders, governments, security agencies and citizens unite in defence of the nation. Civil-military cooperation remains one of the most effective force multipliers in modern security operations, strengthening intelligence gathering, building public confidence and denying criminal elements the support and safe havens they seek.
Since assuming office as Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu has continued to demonstrate that effective military leadership extends beyond the battlefield. His leadership has been characterised by deliberate engagement with communities, strategic partnerships with critical stakeholders and a people-centred approach that has strengthened the relationship between the Nigerian Army and the citizens it is constitutionally mandated to protect.
This renewed emphasis on civil-military relations has helped foster greater public trust in the Nigerian Army, encouraged increased cooperation from local communities and reinforced the understanding that national security is a shared responsibility. The warm reception accorded to the Chief of Army Staff in Ebonyi State, culminating in his investiture with a distinguished traditional title, is a reflection of this growing confidence in his leadership and the Army’s commitment to serving the nation with professionalism, sacrifice and integrity.
The establishment of the Depot Nigerian Army in Amasiri-Edda further demonstrates a leadership philosophy that recognises security as a catalyst for national development. Beyond its strategic military significance, the institution has contributed to socio-economic growth, created opportunities for local communities and strengthened the bond between the military and the people.
The honour bestowed on Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu should therefore be viewed as recognition of a leadership style that has prioritised partnership over isolation, engagement over distance and collaboration over exclusivity. It is an affirmation that when the military earns the trust of the people, communities become active partners in safeguarding peace, preserving national unity and advancing development.
As Nigeria continues its pursuit of lasting peace and stability, the Ebonyi recognition serves as a timely reminder that the strongest foundation for national security lies not only in military capability but also in the confidence, cooperation and shared commitment of the people. This is the enduring legacy of effective civil-military relations, and one that Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu has continued to champion through his leadership of the Nigerian Army.
