Lagos State Government on Tuesday organised a surprise dinner to celebrate the 90th birthday anniversary of Nobel Laureate, Prof Wole Soyinka at the Lagos House Marina.
While speaking at the event, the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu said it was a night of joyful memories as Soyinka is celebrated for his many contributions to literature and how his humanity continues to inspire all.
According to the Governor, his Nobel Prize, which he won many years ago, opened the door for many to dream, and believe that greatness is achievable and his works transcend time touching hearts and minds across the globe
His words: “We celebrate not just his 90 years of life but the countless lives he has inspired and continues to inspire. Thank you, Professor Wole Soyinka, for showing us that through resilience, creativity, and dedication, we all can achieve greatness”.
Responding, Professor Wole Soyinka was full of gratitude to the state government, the people of Lagos and his family who turned up to celebrate him.
Dignitaries in attendance included the Deputy Governor of Lagos, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat; First Lady of Lagos State, Dr. (Mrs.) Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu; Secretary to the State Government, Barrister Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin; Chief of Staff, Mr. Tayo Ayinde, members of the State Executive Council, Traditional Rulers and white Cap Chiefs amongst other distinguished guests
The event, which was coordinated by the Commissioner for Tourism Arts and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, was full of glamour and glitz with top-notch decor and classy poetic renditions and traditional artistic performances from Ara to Spirit of David, Terra Kulture and the troupe of Lagos Council for Arts and Culture.
The highlight of the evening was the unveiling of a special portrait of Professor Wole Soyinka, a true reflection of his enduring legacy.
