Mr. Fuad Kayode Laguda, Chairman of the Committee, noted that each bill is designed to enact laws that will drive significant improvements in the country’s socio-economic development. He emphasized that these measures are essential for fostering sustainable human capital development and building a self-reliant society.
As you are aware, the establishment of vocational, entrepreneurship, and skills acquisition institutions in Nigeria aims to train technicians and middle-level personnel who will act as catalysts for rapid industrialization and the development of our real sector.
Mr. Laguda emphasized the importance of dedication and commitment from all stakeholders present in advancing our educational sector. He urged everyone to be objective and constructive in their contributions and opinions on the Bills at hand.
He also encouraged participants to approach the public hearing with an open mind, a willingness to learn, and a strong commitment to addressing our educational challenges.
“Let us work as patriots towards ensuring a productive educational sector,” he stated.
During the hearing, Senator Mukta DanDutse, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Higher Education, emphasized the need for Nigeria to develop institutional educational programs that will benefit future generations. He assured that the Senate would expedite the passage of the relevant bills.
Mr. Sani Gwarzo, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education, expressed full support for the bills. Stakeholders in the education sector also voiced their backing for the proposed legislation.
Three notable bills currently before the Nigerian House of Representatives focus on advancing vocational and polytechnic education across the country. The first bill, sponsored by Hon. Idu Igeriway, proposes the establishment of a National Polytechnics Commission. This commission would be responsible for supervising, regulating, and coordinating polytechnic education in Nigeria.
The second bill, introduced by Hon. Jesse Okey-Joe Onuakalusi, seeks to create a Federal Vocational and Entrepreneurship Institute in Okota/Oshodi, Lagos State. The proposed institute aims to deliver high-quality education in vocational and entrepreneurial fields.
Lastly, the bill sponsored by Hon. Hassan Shehu Hussain proposes the establishment of a Federal Vocational and Skills Acquisition College in Yankaba, Kano State. This college would focus on research, teaching, instruction, and training related to vocational skills and acquisition
