Dr. Awele Vivien Elumelu CEO Avon Medical Services Turns 50

Dr. Awele Vivien Elumelu is a Nigerian medical doctor who has been contributing a lot to the well-being of humanity through her field, in various capacities. She is popularly known to be the wife of one of Africa’s richest men – in the person of Tony Elumelu (founder of the Tony Elumelu Foundation). Nevertheless, Vivien is no complacent or lazy woman whose whole world revolves around the activities and achievement of her husband alone, but she also takes up responsibilities that gets her to the front scene.

She is the Chairperson of Avon Healthcare Limited and the CEO of Avon Medical Services Limited, where she has been impacting lives for years. The Doctor also oversees the healthcare investments of her husband’s company. She is quite broad in her field and has adequate knowledge in areas like pediatrics, surgery, obstetrics and so on.

Dr. Mrs. Awele Vivien Elumelu was born in the year 1964. She studied Medicine and Surgery in the University of Benin in Edo State (one of the Federal Universities in the country) and was able to graduate from the institution to practice in the field.

She married Mr. Tony in 1993 and both have remained together since then, waxing stronger day and day. She has proved to be a wonderful wife and mother and has been a role model for many women out there. Her marriage is blessed with 7 lovely children and her home is glaringly a happy one.

Before the Heirs story came into the scene, Dr. Vivien has worked as an employee at places like Lagos University Teaching Hospital as well as Grantham and District Hospital in the United Kingdom.

However, she is now the Chairperson of Avon Healthcare Limited as well as the CEO of Avon Medical Services Limited. She is a very industrious woman who also serves as an Investment Professional at Heirs Holdings. She keeps doing her best to ensure her productivity at work doesn’t affect her home and vice versa. And so, she is the one that has been overseeing the healthcare investments of her husband’s firm, and she keeps proving that she is not just there because of her relationship with her husband, but because she is good at the field she has chosen (she is experienced in areas of medicine, pediatrics, surgery, obstetrics, and emergency medicine). Of course, for someone who has worked with the Lagos University Teaching and another hospital in England, she would have gathered relevant knowledge and has become good in the field.

Awele is married to Mr. Tony Elumelu who started from scratch and became the driving force that helped pushed United Bank for Africa to its current position. He also founded Heirs Holdings after stepping down as boss of UBA and has become one of the most influential people in Nigeria. His company has interests in various sectors, including real estate and hospitality. Tony was born in 1963 in the northern part of the country, although he hails from Delta State. He studied Economics at Ambrose Alli University Ekpoma in Edo State – where he got a degree, before moving on to further his studies at the prestigious University of Lagos.

Actually, Vivien ’s works haven’t gone without recognition, and it is glaring. She was appointed by Gavi to Champion Immunisation in our continent a few months ago. She has been on various top scenes and it is obvious the sky is her  starting point. When the announcement was publicly made, she travelled to Switzerland and was there during the Gavi-hosted breakfast meeting. Making comments at the event, Mrs. Elumelu stated that childhood immunization is a very important intervention and that she is honoured to be part of it all. Making comments at the event, the CEO of Gavi – Dr Seth Berkley, also talked about the necessity of bringing Doctor Awele on board. Seth stated that she came at a time for the Vaccine Alliance, and they are delighted to bring her into the arrangement, as she is coming with enough knowledge and expertise from health and business sectors. These experiences are expected to help play a vital role in furthering the work of the Vaccine Alliance in Africa.

While embracing responsibility, Dr. Vivien is quite pleased with the effectiveness of the Gavi business model. She made known her belief that there are potentials therein in terms of bringing greater health and opportunity to the continent. According to her, Gavi’s strategy (bringing public and private players as one) is an example to everyone that should be given adequate attention.

Additionally, the event saw some other private sector partnerships being made known. They are made to address very important things like immunization coverage and data analysis.

So, why won’t a woman with a happy home (with seven children) who still serves as Trustee of the Tony Elumelu Foundation alongside her job as Chairperson of Avon Healthcare and GAVI Ambassador of Immunisation in Africa, be a role model to many? She is a gem that will always be respected and sought after.

CNN referred to the duo of Tony Elumelu and Dr. Awele Elumelu as “Africa’s Power Couple”. Mr. Tony Elumelu needs no special introduction again. He played a huge role in the growth of the famous United Bank of Africa (UBA), and he is also the founder of Heirs Holdings. His Tony Elumelu Foundation, alongside the activities of Dr. Awele Vivian Elumelu, has helped touch the lives of millions of people positively.

CNN deemed them ‘a Power Couple’ for their role in creating millions of jobs for Africans. It was such that the ‘title’ is easily embraced and agreed on by many Nigerians who know what they’ve achieved. Here is a couple that is passionate about empowering African entrepreneurs, and they are good at their dreams. For example, in 2010, the Family gave up to $100 million to empower hundreds of African entrepreneurs via the well-known Tony Elumelu Foundation Entrepreneurship Programme.

Initially, they usually empower 1,000 entrepreneurs each year. Nevertheless, they have moved past the number, due to their passion to see more and more people empowered. Indeed, the goal of the family is to empower these entrepreneurs to create tons of jobs. The family’s commitment is drawn from the ideology of Africapitalism made up by Mr. Tony Elumelu.
